Arguing in English
for Bachelor Students
at the Faculty of Literary Studies (HSE)
Developing one’s own potential to argue in English is important not only for communication in class as well as in everyday life, but also in a narrower application of succeeding in IELTS, TOEFL, and GMAT/GRE examinations. Besides the importance, the skill of convincing your friends and gaining them over is not easy to master and is thus interesting to try. Arguing effectively is an art, and as such it requires practice. Selection of topics for future discussions will be offered to students in the first class of the course as the first topic for discussion. These topics, compatible with the course the students will have completed, touch upon issues concerning language in general or specific languages presented in the recently published books and films and TV programmes that have recently come out. Criteria for evaluating the efficiency of arguing will be distributed among the participants to apply in evaluating all other participants.
